$20 Million Airport Expansion Expected to Bolster the Kamloops Economy by Millions

Kamloops, B.C. (July 23, 2007) - A $20 million program to expand the Kamloops Airport will provide greater air access to the region, boost the local tourism industry and continue the diversification of the local economy in the face of a declining forest industry due to the pine beetle infestation.

The funding comes from the B.C. government ($4 million), the federal government ($6.6 million) and an airport improvement fee ($10 million). It will be invested in a 2,000-foot runway extension, improved navigation aids, and an expanded airport terminal.

"The airport-expansion project will ensure long-term sustainability for Kamloops," says Kamloops Mayor Terry Lake. "It will allow the world to conveniently come to Kamloops to see what a great city it is to live, work and visit."

Lake adds an expanded runway will allow Kamloops to successfully market national and international sports tournaments, secure international charters, attract more international students for Thompson Rivers University, provide a level playing field to attract new investment and businesses and assist the region to develop alternative replacement industries and jobs for the forestry sector.

"Kamloops is home to some of Canada's top employers who rely on airline service to support their growth," says Lake. "The city was losing approximately 13 per cent of potential local passenger traffic to Kelowna Airport, which saw exponential growth since its expansion. A larger airport puts us back on a level playing field for investment dollars."

The Kamloops Airport is an integral part of the business and travel community within the Kamloops Region and serves a catchment area of approximately 138,000 residents. The airport currently facilitates regular air service to destinations in British Columbia, Alberta and USA including Vancouver, Kelowna, Prince George, Calgary and Seattle. It is anticipated the expansion should be completed by early 2009.
