| Golf’s Great Greening - Spring is only a winter away in Kamloops! Tuesday, October 31st, 2006 |
Kamloops, British Columbia – In 2007 three new Championship golf courses will be opening within an hour drive of Kamloops, cementing the areas reputation as one of Canada’s premier resort destinations. Tobiano Golf Course, Talking Rock and Canoe Creek are just three more reasons golfers are dreaming and planning for the great greening of spring in the Kamloops area.
Kamloops golf was probably one of the best kept secrets in all of Canada; however, the variety of distinctive course designs, from dunes to mountains, the area’s warm dry climate and the area’s charming hospitality are making it a must for every serious golf visitor to British Columbia’s interior. Located at the junction of the North and South Thompson Rivers this vibrant city of 85,000 boasts an eight-month golfing season that is virtually humidity-free. For the diversity of mountain golf, desert style and traditional links layouts Kamloops is the perfect destination. Tobiano Championship Golf Course, opening beside Kamloops Lake, is designed by the prestigious Thomas McBroom team of course architects, whose credits include the award-winning Links at Crowbush Cove and Le Geant at Mont Tremblant. The 18-hole Tobiano Golf Course will eventually have a lakeside village, equestrian centre and a marina, all just minutes from tee off. Canoe Creek Golf Course, located near Salmon Arm, is an 18-hole championship course that will offer golfers a new 7000+ yard track. Canadian PGA and Champion's Touring Pro Dave Barr and businessman Marc Pezzin are behind this venture. Marc describes it as very user friendly with relatively flat greens. The main highlight will be the par-3, third hole where golfers must shoot over a long man-made waterfall arriving at the green, guarded by two pot bunkers. Also planned are a driving range, pub and a 50-room lodge for stay and play packages. The new 18-hole Talking Rock golf course, on the shores of Little Shuswap Lake at the Quaaout Resort, takes the golfer on an adventure through the diverse landscape of the Little Shuswap Indian Band Reserve. The course meanders through a mature, sandy forest setting and ends with a breathtaking 18th hole along the shoreline of Little Shuswap Lake. The unique design is by well known Canadian architects, Graham Cooke and Wayne Carlton. It’s natural and rugged character will require strategy and thought for players of all skills and abilities. These new courses will join other magnificent championship layouts carved into the incredibly diverse Kamloops landscapes. Rated as the British Columbia PGA’s Golf Facility of the year in 2005, The Dunes at Kamloops sports lush fairways and challenging bunkers sculpted through the sand dunes. Sun Rivers was voted by Golf Digest in 2003 as western Canada’s best new course. The Robert Trent Jones Sr. design is a true desert course with sagebrush and sand dunes augmenting the course’s many dramatic elevation changes. Aberdeen Hills has flowing greens that follow the natural contours of the Kamloops mountainside, offering a totally different and challenging experience. Situated high above the South Thompson River in a tranquil, serene Ponderosa paradise is the intriguing golf of Eaglepoint. Nearby Sun Peaks Golf Course, nestled at the foot of three mountains, is an 18-hole Graham Cooke course that matches inspiring design with magnificent alpine vistas. The wide range of summer and winter sports set in a diverse landscape makes Kamloops the perfect vacation choice. For variety, add in Kamloops’ history, culture and heritage attractions, plus terrific fishing, exciting mountain biking and scenic hiking. |
