Winter Things To Do in Kamloops
Friday, November 25th, 2005
Kamloops receives an average annual snowfall of 90 cm (about 3 ft) and boasts more than 2,000 hours of sunshine, making it a perfect location for all manner of winter sports.

Skiing & Boarding:
The Kamloops region is famous for sunshine and powder, star attractions for anyone on the hunt for skiing excitement. Sun Peaks Resort, only 45 minutes northeast of Kamloops, is a three-mountain, European-style village with ski-in, ski-out accommodations. This award-winning resort offers 94 runs, 881 m (2,891ft) of vertical, and nine lifts, including three high-speed quads. Or check out the snowmobile park and the toboggan hill. With a scenic mountain village offering unbeatable accommodation, dining and shopping, Sun Peaks Resort is winter fun all wrapped up and waiting.

Harper Mountain, a little closer to Kamloops, is a great family ski hill. Try night skiing Wednesday thru Friday. There's also a lighted toboggan run, a tube slide area, skating pond, day lodge, a ski shop and a licenced cafeteria for comfortable dining. Back-country and heli-skiing enthusiasts can explore miles of untouched terrain at Mike Wiegele Helicopter Skiing in Blue River, which attracts skiers from around the world. For cross-country enthusiasts, both Sun Peaks and Harper Mountain have groomed trails.

The region's largest groomed classic and skating facility at Stake Lake, is specially designed for cross country skiing and has a 45 km (28 mi) trail network. At Logan Lake, there's a 2 km lighted section along a 36 km (23 mi) length of track set trails. Around Clearwater, ski on the Candle Creek Trails, Wells Grays Park Ski Trails and North Thompson Park Trails. The communities of Clinton, 70 Mile House and Chase also have cross-country ski trails close by.

Dog Sledding
Dogsledding is an unforgettable way to explore the backcountry, being pulled by a team of dogs through snowy forests or across ice-covered lakes. Wells Gray Park is a wilderness wonderland, with dog sledding at its best.

Snowmobiling
Snowmobile through remote backcountry areas along well-established logging roads, at a world-class winter resort like Sun Peaks, or go off-the-beaten-path around Clearwater, Logan Lake and Merritt.

Snowshoeing
For a commune with nature, strap on high-tech aluminum snowshoes and explore the natural winter terrain along snowshoe trails as part of a group, or set out alone.
