Summer Activities in Kamloops
Friday, June 10th, 2005
With more sunshine than most places ever dream of, and forests, rivers, lakes and mountains to play on, summer is an adventure in the Kamloops region. Mountain biking, river rafting, hiking, jet boating, golfing, kayaking, horseback riding ... it’s all here in a magnificent setting.

Golf is special in the Kamloops region and one visit will show you why. With nineteen courses (plus one on the way) in scenic, affordable, easily accessible locations and an extra long playing season, a golf adventure is always possible.

In Kamloops, play one of five 18-hole championship courses, each one unique and challenging. The Graham Cooke-designed Sun Rivers Golf Resort and The Dunes at Kamloops are magnificent. Eagle Point Golf & Country Club, designed by Robert Heaslip, and Rivershore Golf Links, designed by Robert Trent Jones, tests skills in unforgettable surroundings. Kamloops Golf and Country Club is a beautiful walk in the park — serene yet challenging. Executive courses including Aberdeen Hills, Mount Paul and Pineridge offer exciting play at affordable prices

Canoeing and kayaking
Paddling along great rivers through amazing scenery with plentiful wildlife is all part of the picture in this region. It’s the perfect choice for an afternoon with the children on a quiet lake or a week of serious paddling and some fast water.

A warm up for some advanced paddling is the Thompson River, between Goldpan campground and the Nicoamen River. It’s a grade 3, and takes 2 hours to complete. The Thompson River from Nicoamen River to Lytton is for advanced paddlers only, and is classed from a 3+ to 4, and maybe to a 5 during runoff. This section of the river will take anywhere from 3-6 hours. Other rivers to enjoy paddling in this region are the Adams and the Nicola.

Fishing
For seasoned veterans or those casting for the first time, a fishing experience in the Kamloops region hooks them all. With more than 200 lakes within an hour’s drive of Kamloops and 1,000 lakes in the region, anglers worldwide consider themselves in fish paradise. In Kamloops, there’s the gear, the guide, or the goods on the best bites, whether pulling on a pair of hip waders for some early morning fly fishing or long johns for some midwinter ice fishing.

During September and October, the banks of the Adams River are a sight to behold. That’s when the normally quiet waters of the river turn turbulent and red with as many as two million sockeye salmon migrating from the Pacific Ocean to their home waters to spawn.

Hiking
Trails in the Kamloops region criss-cross a magnificent landscape. Adventure and fun lie around every turn of the path. The Mara Mountain, Hoodoos, Dewdrop Range, Tranquille River, Sugarloaf Mountain, Gibralter Rock — the choices are endless.

Horse Riding
High country and down-home adventure from the topside of a horse is very much part of the local experience. Guest ranches offer every kind of vacation, from pampered resort relaxation to rustic backcountry experiences. Close to Kamloops there’s Jandana Ranch, Wells Gray Guest Ranch and the Stump Lake Cattle Company, where guests can stay in a turn-of-the-century lodge and chow down on barbecued steak with local cowboys.

Mountain Biking
Hoodoos, rugged canyons, logging roads, singletrack ridges, spectacular steeps, sliders, ramps and big air — it’s in the Kamloops area and makes for some of the best riding in Canada. Bikers can spend a summer here and never set a wheel in the same place twice. From the Screaming Mosquito, the Elevators and the Water Chute, there are trails for beginners, intermediate and expert riders.

About 20 minutes northeast of Kamloops is the Paul Lake Circuit, a 20 km (13 mi) ride with very nice downhill runs. Keep on going to Pinantan Lake for a climb followed by an hour long descent from a beautiful viewpoint to the west shore of the lake.

Stake Lake has 45 km (28 mi) of marked trails and is a great area for family rides. Inks Lake (just off the Coquihalla Hwy south of Kamloops) is also a popular riding area with locals and visitors.

Check with a local bike shop for up to date riding information.

River Rafting
For pure, high-energy adventure, rafting has few equals, and in the Kamloops region the rapids are fast and frequent. Whitewater thrills are most enjoyable with established rafting companies that are available on the Thompson, Fraser, Clearwater and Adams rivers. A wide variety of outfitters offer trip diversity, professionalism, and exemplary safety.
