One of the final pieces of the Tournament Capital is heading for home plate. The provincial and federal governments have stepped forward with funding for a slo-pitch facility in Rayleigh. On Thursday, Ottawa and Victoria announced joint funding for stimulus or "shovel-ready" projects worth nearly $35 million around the region, including millions for the Rayleigh facility. The $9.8-million project will be cost-shared between Kamloops, Victoria and Ottawa, with each chipping in $3.27 million. Mayor Peter Milobar said the slo-pitch park was the city's No. 1 priority and will provide economic benefits long after its built. "With the ability we'll have to host a slo-pitch tournaments to a level that probably won't have been seen anywhere . . . it should bode well to strengthen the whole tourism segment of our economy," he said. The city had already approved its portion of the funding for the slow-pitch park. Depending on the winter weather, Milobar said the city is eager to get started on construction as soon as possible.
