Dude Looks Like a Lady?
Tuesday, March 10th, 2009
What happens when you’ve been playing Shakespeare’s leading ladies your whole career and then, just at the peak of it all, by King’s command, it’s taken away? According to Samuel Pepys, actor Edward Kynaston was “the most beautiful woman in the house”. But when Kynaston is forced not only to confront his male side, but to act it as well, will he survive?

Peopled with characters from history and fiction, Compleat Female Stage Beauty by Jeffrey Hatcher offers a beautiful tale of love and betrayal in post-Restoration theatre. Read by nine actors (both local and not-so local), the play offers a period perspective on sexuality and finding oneself that is absolutely relevant today. In 2004, Compleat Female Stage Beauty became the feature film Stage Beauty, featuring Billy Crudup and Claire Danes. Join Project X for the second in a series of readings exploring contemporary playwrights’ takes on Shakespeare, his characters and his ideals.

Compleat Female Stage Beauty will be read for all to hear, March 14, 8pm at The Old Courthouse. Tickets ($12 for adults, $10 for students & seniors) will be available at the door.
