FIRST NATIONS HERITAGE

Secwepemc Museum
This is the ultimate place to gain insight on the rich history of the Shuswap people. Have you ever wondered how a birch bark canoe could possibly be one of the main forms of transportation up and down the river? Storytelling is a significant aspect to the Shuswap people's way of life. Immerse yourself in legends and tales passed down from generation to generation.

Visit the Heritage Park and go through the incredible 2000-year old Shuswap winter village and the summer pit houses. The village features a tule mat lodge, a hunting lean-to, rack for fish-drying, ancient smoke-houses and an all natural fish trap with secret baiting techniques!

Be sure to visit the Ethnobotanical Gardens at the Heritage Park as well. Here you can explore the five zones of ecosystems which represent the Secwepemc Territory. This aspect is particularly interesting as each zone shows which native plants were traditionally harvested by the Secwepemc for medicinal, culinary and visionary purposes.

Kamloopa Pow Wow
The Kamloopa Pow Wow is one of the largest gatherings in Western Canada showcasing First Nation’s culture! Kamloopa Pow Wow is an annual three-day event that takes place on the August long weekend (see events page for exact date) and it will attract performers, competitors, crafters and artists.

It was started in 1980 to encourage the young people to become involved in their native heritage. The event is open to anyone who is interested in learning about native culture. The Pow Wow is a spectacular expression of the Secwepemc heritage here in the Kamloops area and boasts vibrant display of storytelling, song, and dance.
